Digital Grids

10/2019

Tasked to produce three alternative sets of magazine pages (250 x 202mm trimmed page size), which explore the use of different grid systems. Each set consists of two double-page spreads giving us a 'splash' and 'turn' page to work with.

Each set features:

  • a headline (written by me)

  • a sub-heading (written by me)

  • a stand-first (written by me)

  • at least one pull quote (written by me)

  • at least one caption (written by me)

  • folios

  • running head/foot

  • a minimum of four pictures (taken by me, must be varied across the different spreads)

  • a minimum of 600 words of dummy copy taken from any source

While the basic content remains the same for each set of spreads, what was required was of us to explore the effects of using different column structures:

  • 6 columns

  • 9 columns

  • 11 columns

Each number of columns provided its own opportunities and restrictions; it was tasked to us to explore the relationship between images, typographic elements and negative space; and how differing column structures affect the page. We explored the effective styling for all the elements within our typographic hierarchy.

Overall, I really enjoyed this project. I found a solid new appreciation for editorial design and it is something I am considering expanding my knowledge in.
