Lost in Translation

10/2019

Lost in Translation is a book of experimental typography. Each student was given a line of text to work with and are given one page in the book to work on. We were essentially creating a typographic 'comic'. This was to be commercially printed and sold at the Lakes International Comics Festival (LICAF).

This was an interesting challenge to say the least. Using type as image to create an interesting experimental piece. Taking the term 'comic' and not using image to tell a story but rather letters and words.

An exercise in experimentation rather than design problem solving. The final piece had to have been created entirely of type. It also had to have been initially made using analogue techniques before any digital editing could be done. The restriction of only two colours were allowed, one of them had to be black, the other was our choice. However, we were allowed to use the variety of tints of the colour of our choice as well as the black which allowed me to create this moody, broken and cold composition.
